Dr. Aris tapped the display on the main terminal, prompting the local server to compile the telemetry from Elijah’s blind trial. The cooling fans in the console bay whined, shifting to a higher pitch as the processor analyzed the torque inputs. On my auxiliary monitor, the raw graph lines settled, displaying the physical pressure measurements recorded by the sensor bracelet. The final alignment curve was a narrow, perfect spike, centering exactly at the target resonance frequency of point-four-two.
Elijah stood by the console, his hands still tucked deep into his lab coat pockets. His shoulders, which usually slumped when he complained about the equipment, were set straight. He did not look at Caleb, who remained standing near the safety barrier, his eyes fixed on the terminal screen. The silence in the room was broken only by the low hum of the beam line power supply and the rhythmic click of the cooling valves.
‘The system is pulling the historical torque profiles for comparison,’ Dr. Aris said. He adjusted his glasses, leaning closer to the terminal screen. ‘Every time an operator adjusts the dials, the internal sensors register the exact physical force applied to the calibration cylinder. It creates a physical signature, a unique profile of torque, speed, and dwell time. No two operators apply pressure in the same way.’
I clicked the command to overlay the files on my screen. The system loaded the torque signatures from Elijah’s previous failed calibration attempts over the past three weeks. I zoomed in on the torque-to-rotation ratio. In every prior attempt, Elijah’s input graph showed a smooth, controlled adjustment that reached near-perfect alignment-followed immediately by a sharp, heavy spike in downward force just before he had stepped away. It was a deliberate physical twist, applied to the sensor bracelet’s casing to throw the alignment out of the tolerance zone.
Dr. Aris watched the screen as the overlay processed. The blue line of today’s flawless blind test aligned precisely with the initial phases of the previous, failed runs. The physical hand pressure, the speed of the rotation, and the micro-adjustments were identical. The only difference was the absence of the final, disruptive torque spike.
‘Look at the rotation speed on the micro-dials,’ Dr. Aris said, pointing to the screen. ‘The transition from the primary axis to the secondary axis takes exactly twelve seconds. That matches the blind trial run. Elijah, your hand movements during the blind test were identical to the runs you claimed you could not complete. The micro-Newton values show the same steady control.’
Elijah did not answer. He slowly pulled his hands from his pockets and rested them on the edge of the console. His fingers did not tremble. He stared at the blue and red lines on the screen, his face expressionless under the flat white light of the lab.
Caleb walked over to the console, standing behind his brother. He looked down at the physical signature files. His jaw remained set, his hands clasped behind his back. He did not say anything, but his gaze remained locked on the torque charts that proved the precision of the hands that had claimed to be helpless.
‘The server log doesn’t lie about physical force,’ I said from my station, updating the screen to show the final mechanical alignment index. ‘The sensor bracelet recorded the exact same motor-skill pattern. The fumbled runs were not fumbled due to poor coordination. They were identical right up to the moment the alignment was thrown off.’
Dr. Aris clicked a prompt, locking the screen. ‘The system is generating the final validation report. We will have the official log printed and signed to close out this calibration cycle.’
