I stepped back into Prep Room 3B. The cool air smelled of antiseptic, and the hum of the overhead ventilation unit was the loudest sound in the small space. Elena Vance remained still in the reclining chair, her breathing slow and shallow. The blue indicator light on her temple pulsed at a steady rate, signaling that her local neural implant was still waiting for pairing clearance.

I walked over to the armrest of the chair and reached for the silver Implant Consent Tablet. The screen was dark, but a gentle tap woke the interface. I pulled a diagnostic cable from the cart and connected it directly to the tablet’s secondary service port. Marcus’s shadow appeared in the doorway, his silhouette blocking the light from the Central Console Corridor. He did not enter the room; he stood with his shoulder pressed against the metal doorframe, his eyes fixed on the device in my hands.

“The calibration cycle is auto-saving,” Marcus said, his voice dropping to a low, tight murmur. “Leave the tablet alone, Jesse.”

“The local hardware buffer hasn’t synced to the main server yet,” I said, pointing to the transfer status bar on the diagnostic cart’s screen. “It retains the raw sector write history until the patient is physically unpatched.”

I tapped the partition icon on the diagnostic interface. A progress wheel spun for a few seconds, then resolved into a list of system hex-code lines. I scrolled past the system initializations. Near the bottom of the stack, the system had flagged three manual overrides that had occurred while the biometric sync patch was inactive.

I pointed to the lines of code. “These overrides weren’t generated by our clinic’s local server. Look at the routing header. It’s a direct connection protocol.”

Marcus took a step into the room, his boots silent on the gray tile. He didn’t look at the screen; he looked at the hallway behind him, then back at my hands on the console. “It’s an automated calibration template.”

“The header includes a personal banking transit routing number,” I said, reading the text string off the small green terminal display. “It’s registered to Harold Vance. The timestamp shows this modification was paid for and scheduled through an external developer portal three days ago. It has your technician signature authorization code attached to the final clearance block.”

Marcus’s hands slid into his lab coat pockets. He did not deny the code. He stood beside the diagnostic cart, his gaze moving from the tablet to Elena’s sleeping face, then back to the screen. The muscles along his jaw tightened.

“She is set to discharge in twenty minutes,” Marcus said, his voice flat. “If you disrupt the queue, the system logs a calibration failure. The medical director gets an automatic alert.”

“If she leaves with these settings, the remote access port on her implant stays open,” I said. “Her home security and neural telemetry will sync directly to her husband’s device. She didn’t sign for that.”

“The transaction is processed, Jesse,” Marcus said. He pulled his hands from his pockets, his fingers slightly trembling as he adjusted his security badge. “The clinic database already shows a clean file. If you flag this locally, the discrepancy will trigger a full diagnostic audit of every machine in this sector. They will lock the whole floor down. You won’t have a job by the end of the shift.”

The terminal screen blinked. A red alert bar appeared at the bottom of the console: *Unresolved Hardware Log Discrepancy. System Sync Pending.*
