Part 4: The Sovereign Lock
The red alert bar pulsed on the console, casting a thin glow over the diagnostic cart. Elena’s chest rose and fell in a slow, rhythmic pattern. Her eyelids fluttered slightly, signaling the beginning of the arousal cycle from the light sedation.
Marcus reached toward the diagnostic cable, his fingers hovering near the connector. “Unplug it, Jesse. Let the sync fail. The system will default to the database record I wrote.”
I kept my hand firmly on the frame of the Implant Consent Tablet. “If I press the manual sync recovery button on this tablet, the raw local buffer goes straight to the external regulatory archive. The encrypted routing key with your signature and Harold Vance’s payment ID will be permanently written into the state registry.”
Marcus stopped. He slowly drew his hand back, his arm stiff. His face was pale under the cool LED lighting, the muscles in his neck visibly tense. “You press that, and we both leave this clinic in cuffs. The clinic’s license will be suspended. Nobody wins.”
“I am not pressing it,” I said, keeping my voice down. “Not if you authorize a hard local boundary lock.”
Marcus stared at me. “A hard lock requires a level-four administrative override. It burns the active profile. The system will flag my local terminal key as compromised to prevent further changes to her file.”
“Then swipe your card,” I said.
I turned the tablet toward him. The screen displayed the boundary configuration panel. I tapped the icon for *Permanent Personal Lockout*. The screen turned a deep red, demanding a physical credential swipe to confirm the irreversible setting. Once applied, the implant’s domestic boundary could not be modified again without a full surgical extraction and reset.
Marcus stood still for several seconds. The hum of the corridor servers seemed to fill the quiet room. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his silver credential card, and swiped it slowly through the tablet’s side reader.
The screen flashed green: *Local Boundary Locked. Sector Access Revoked for User: M_REG_9082.*
The local terminal buzzed. On the wall monitor, Marcus’s name disappeared from the active technician slot, replaced by a generic system administrator placeholder. His high-level authorization for Prep Room 3B was gone, permanently flagged as expired on this console.
I pulled the diagnostic cable from the tablet. The screen returned to its standard blue welcome interface, showing the domestic boundary status as *Locked – User Sovereign*.
Elena’s eyes slowly opened. She blinked against the bright ceiling lights, her gaze drifting around the room before settling on the tablet. She reached out a hand, her fingers still slightly unsteady, and touched the biometric sync patch on the armrest.
The tablet chimed, registering her conscious print. The screen flashed: *Pairing Complete. Boundary Settings: Protected.*
“How do you feel, Mrs. Vance?” I asked, stepping to her side.
She rubbed her forehead, her voice thick with sleep. “A bit dizzy. Is the calibration finished?”
“Yes,” I said, handing her a small cup of water from the cart. “The settings are locked. You are free to go home.”
She took a slow sip, nodding quietly. Marcus stood near the door, his hands back in his pockets, watching her sit up. He did not say a word.
Ten minutes later, Elena Vance walked out of Prep Room 3B, her sovereign boundaries intact and completely shielded from her husband’s remote control. I cleaned the diagnostic cart, sorting the wires back into their designated slots. Marcus remained at the central desk in the corridor, staring at his deactivated terminal screen, his access to the sector database officially severed. I picked up my clipboard and walked toward the next prep room, the quiet weight of the compromise settling over the empty hallway.
