Part 2: The Slot That Should Not Exist

The question stayed in the air while Dr. Reyes leaned closer to the monitor and the nurse with the clipboard stopped moving altogether. Noah looked at the screen, then at Mara’s hand on the table, then at Eli, who had not spoken since the question landed. The consciousness drive remained lit at the edge of the table, its cable running into the clinic port like a clean line that refused to hide.

Dr. Reyes tapped through the record. The monitor brightened, then shifted to a second page. A line appeared with Noah Sloane’s name attached to the reservation. Another line showed the transfer slot as active. The staff member checked the badge log, then checked it again. Noah stepped half a pace sideways, still calm, and said the entry must have been provisional. He said the clinic used provisional holds all the time. He said people were reading too much into a staging screen.

Eli reached for the edge of the table this time and left his hand there. He did not touch the drive. Mara watched the hand, then the screen, then Noah. The room had stopped pretending to be busy. The nurse had put the clipboard against her chest. The visitor by the door had shifted forward in the chair. Dr. Reyes kept scrolling and found the access log tied to the same reservation. The initials on the log matched Noah’s badge.

Noah saw the log and answered before anyone asked. He said the badge system sometimes attributed entries to the last verified clinician. Dr. Reyes read the time stamp out loud. It matched the moment Noah had been standing in the room denying the promise. The sentence did not change tone, but it changed the room. Eli turned his head toward Noah slowly, as if waiting to hear the next correction.

Mara did not speak over the staff member. She waited while Dr. Reyes opened the hold detail and the transfer detail on separate panes. The two records did not line up. One showed the drive sealed for family review. The other showed the drive cleared for processing under Noah’s authority. The contradiction was plain on the screen. Dr. Reyes stared at it long enough to make the silence heavier.

Noah put both hands flat on the chair back in front of him. He said the clinic had a temporary protocol for cases like this. He said the family had been told. He said nobody should be confused by chart language. The explanation came out neat, but it did not fit the record. Dr. Reyes asked where the family notice was. Noah said it had been sent. Eli answered at the same time that nothing had been sent to him.

That was the first crack in the room that did not close. Dr. Reyes checked the message queue and found no notice. The nurse looked up from the clipboard for the first time and then away again. Noah repeated that the system could lag. The monitor showed the reservation stamp, the badge log, and the missing notice all at once. Mara’s fingers tightened on the table edge, then relaxed.

Eli looked at the drive and then at Noah. His voice stayed level when he said the promise had been made in the room, with the drive on the table and Dr. Reyes present. Noah answered that Eli was remembering the discussion incorrectly. He said stress could make details blur. He said the clinic had enough to handle without turning a workflow problem into a family scene. Each sentence pushed the same old pressure back onto Eli, but the screen stayed open.

Dr. Reyes asked Noah to step aside while the record was reviewed. Noah did not move right away. He kept his eyes on the monitor and then on the drive, as if measuring what the room could still be made to believe. When he finally spoke, the words were quiet and precise. He said if the hold was being read that way, then someone had entered it without authorization.

Dr. Reyes turned from the monitor to Noah. Eli did the same. The drive stayed visible between them, untouched and fully lit. Mara looked at the same screen and the same drive, and the contradiction now had a shape the whole room could see: if Noah was not the one who promised the hold, whose badge had locked the transfer slot under his name?
