Part 4: The Cold Audit
Clara looked down at the VMD-90 drive resting on the counter. Her hand hovered near her purse strap, but she did not reach for her authorization token. She did not move toward the floor manager’s office either, despite the clear evidence of Leo’s unauthorized trust transaction on the screen. She stood quietly, observing the blinking amber light of the drive.
“I am going home, Leo,” Clara said quietly.
“Clara, if you leave, I will not be able to stop the deletion,” Leo said, his voice straining to maintain a composed tone. He tapped the console screen twice, the yellow bypass light blinking rapidly. “The system will lock the file.”
Clara did not argue. She looked at Leo for a long moment, her expression unreadable, then turned and walked toward the glass exit doors of the Eternal Echoes Showroom. The glass doors slid open with a soft hiss, letting in the cool evening air from the street before sealing shut again. The silence in the alcove returned, heavier now without Clara’s presence. The hologram of their father continued to flicker, its digital eyes staring blankly at the empty space where she had stood. She did not glance back at the holographic projection of their father, which continued to loop its silent holiday greeting in the alcove.
Leo stood behind the counter, his hands resting on the edge of the console. He did not chase after her. Instead, he quickly turned back to his screen, his fingers flying across the keyboard as he attempted to finalize the emergency override and mask the watch purchase transaction before the scheduled audit could run.
Marcus watched the diagnostics terminal as the clock on the wall struck five. The showroom’s automated end-of-day processes began to execute, pulling transaction records and system logs into the central database. On Leo’s terminal, the bypass warning did not clear. Instead, a series of system windows opened in rapid succession, their red borders flashing against the blue background of the showroom interface.
Marcus’s monitor displayed the system-wide administration report. The automated audit triggered by the manual bypass had completed its cross-reference of the Vance estate accounts. The mismatch between the pre-paid estate invoice and the recent luxury retail debit was instantly cataloged by the central system. A loud chime sounded from Leo’s console. The display froze. A bold, white text box appeared over the workspace: Access Revoked. Operator Credentials Suspended Pending Administrative Review. Unauthorized trust account activity detected.
Leo tapped the touch screen repeatedly, but the interface remained locked. The VMD-90 drive, still sitting on the desk, clicked as its internal lock mechanism engaged, securing the physical voice data within the showroom’s vault.
Marcus stood up from his diagnostics desk and began to shut down his station. Leo remained standing in front of the locked terminal, staring at the administrative notice. He did not speak or move, his face pale under the flickering blue light of the muted hologram. Marcus picked up his jacket, left the technical desk, and walked out into the evening, leaving the silent console to display the formal record of the collapse.
