“The seal is unbroken,” I said, pointing to the blue strip of adhesive running down the side of Vial V-709. “If you reprinted the label on Thursday, you would have had to break this tamper-evident seal to apply it, or the label was applied before the vial was ever sealed. Which means this vial was not sealed on Tuesday.”

Marcus’s eyes shifted toward the sequencing machine. “It’s a minor procedural anomaly. You’re trying to block a cure over a piece of tape, Julian.”

“I am looking at the physical timeline,” I said. “And the physical timeline does not stop at the label.”

I reached into my briefcase and pulled out the shipping manifests I had retrieved from the delivery bin near the garage’s side entrance. The Vance lab relied on a specialized courier service to deliver the proprietary vector enzymes required to synthesize the target sequence. Without these raw enzymes, the Model S-4 sequencing machine could not construct the DNA strands.

I laid the paper courier receipt on the counter next to Vial V-709. “This is the delivery receipt for the synthesis enzymes, batch lot E-404. Marcus, you ordered these on Monday.”

Clara stepped closer, her eyes scanning the courier’s printout. “What does the delivery time say?”

“The courier log shows the package was signed for by Marcus on Thursday afternoon at 2:14 PM,” I said. “The signature matches the receiver log at the gate.”

The room fell silent except for the low, rhythmic hum of the cryo-storage compressor. Marcus did not reach for the paper. He stood still, his hands resting on the edge of the metal desk.

“If the raw synthesis enzymes did not arrive at this laboratory until Thursday afternoon,” I said, “it was physically impossible to synthesize the therapeutic vector on Tuesday morning. Yet the digital ledger shows a completed sequence upload and validation timestamp from Tuesday.”

Clara looked from the shipping receipt to the test vial on the counter. “Marcus. Explain this.”

“The courier must have logged the delivery late,” Marcus said, his voice flat. “They brought a preliminary batch on Monday night. I used that for the Tuesday run.”

“The distributor’s invoice shows only one shipment was dispatched to this address this week,” I said. “And the digital ledger contains the exact batch code-E-404-which was only generated by the manufacturer on Wednesday.”

The contradiction lay bare on the office counter. The physical elements of the lab-the label, the shipping manifest, the delivery signature-refused to align with the immutable digital record.

“Julian, there must be a system error in the ledger’s clock,” Clara said, her voice tightening. “A network sync delay.”

“The ledger uses a decentralized network protocol,” I replied. “It syncs every ten seconds. A two-day delay is mathematically impossible without manual intervention.” I turned to the computer terminal. “The question now is how a Tuesday timestamp was recorded for a sequence that could not have been physically created until Thursday at the absolute earliest-and who authorized the database bypass to write it.”
