Part 4: The Locked Boundary

I slid the handheld microchip scanner back onto my belt clip. Turning toward the outer gate, I grasped the heavy steel latch and swung the outer barrier shut. I slid the thick steel deadbolt into place and snapped the heavy brass padlock closed, locking the physical boundary gate between Chloe and the park interior.

“You need to step away from the transition zone,” I told Chloe through the chain-link mesh. “The gate is locked.”

Chloe looked at the padlock, then down at her phone, which remained dark. She did not attempt to reach for the latch. Her shoulders slumped slightly, and she pulled her purse strap higher onto her shoulder. “Marcus said he would handle the legal follow-up,” she said, her voice flat.

“He can handle it through the city recreation office,” I replied, my voice carrying clearly through the metal mesh. “Because as of right now, I am placing a formal restriction on Marcus’s household park pass. The account is flagged in our gate database.”

I pointed to the computer terminal inside the attendant booth. “From this point forward, neither Marcus nor anyone acting on his behalf is permitted to enter this facility or request the release of any animal registered here. This restriction will remain in place until a certified court order is submitted directly to the county administration office and verified by our legal department.”

Sarah let out a slow, steady breath, her hand relaxing slightly on Buster’s leash. The golden retriever sat down on the concrete pad, his tail tapping twice against the ground before he rested his chin on Sarah’s shoe.

Chloe turned away from the gate without another word. She walked down the gravel path toward the street, her heels clicking against the stones. The black sedan that had been idling near the hydrant pulled up to meet her at the corner. She opened the passenger door, got inside, and closed the door behind her. The car immediately accelerated, turning the corner and disappearing from view.

Outside the fence, the family with the husky stepped forward. I unlocked the outer transition gate just enough to let them enter the staging area, keeping a firm hand on the latch to maintain the boundary.

“Thank you, Devon,” Sarah said, handing the laminated Veterinary Microchip Record sheet back to me so I could file a copy of the ID number in our daily log.

“Keep that record in his travel bag,” I said, typing the restriction details into the park database terminal. “The flag on Marcus’s account is active now. He won’t be getting past this gate.”

Sarah nodded once, clipped the leash securely to Buster’s harness, and walked through the inner gate toward the parking lot. I watched her lead the dog to her station wagon, where Buster hopped into the back without hesitation. I clicked the gate shut behind them, the heavy metal latch falling into place with a solid, final metallic snap.
