Part 2: The Uncropped Frame

Luke zoomed in on the left side of the uncropped video frame, where the hallway met the glass back door. “Look at the reflection in the glass,” he said, gesturing for Sarah to come closer.

Sarah crossed the kitchen, her steps hesitant. Mark stayed by the refrigerator for a moment before slowly walking over, his eyes fixed on the laptop screen.

In the wider, uncropped frame, the edge of the glass back door was visible. Reflected clearly in the double-paned glass was Eleanor’s face. Her expression was neutral, devoid of the concern she had expressed in the group chat. She held the phone steady at chest height, capturing Sarah’s breakdown with practiced stillness.

But it was what lay below her hands that drew Luke’s attention.

In the reflection, Eleanor’s left hand was extended toward the brass deadbolt of the back door. Held firmly between her thumb and forefinger was a worn brass key. The key was inserted into the lock, the cylinder turned fully to the open position.

“She claimed she lost that key six months ago,” Sarah whispered, her voice barely audible. Her eyes darted to the identical brass key sitting on the kitchen island. “She said she dropped it in the garden center parking lot.”

Mark leaned closer to the screen, his jaw tightening. His brow furrowed as he stared at the reflection of his mother’s hand holding the key inside their locked house. He opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out. He looked at the key on the island, then back at the laptop.

“She didn’t film this through a window,” Luke said, pointing at the screen where the door frame met the interior molding. “She unlocked the door, stepped inside the hallway, and stood there filming you. She was inside the house.”

Mark cleared his throat, his eyes darting to the floor before returning to the image. He reached out as if to close the laptop, but stopped his hand halfway. “It could be a different key,” he muttered, though his voice lacked conviction.

Sarah did not answer him. She simply stared at the screen, her breathing leveling out into a cold, hard rhythm. The kitchen went completely silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator. The evidence was undeniable. Eleanor had kept the spare key, waited until she knew Sarah was alone and vulnerable, and used it to gain entry. She had stood inside their private space, captured a vulnerable moment without consent, and then cropped the video to make it look like an external observation before sharing it with the entire family.

Sarah’s hands stopped trembling. She stood up straight, her gaze shifting from the laptop to Mark. “She has been coming in here when we aren’t home,” she said slowly. “She lied about the key.”

Mark rubbed the back of his neck, his face reddening. “Sarah, let’s not jump to conclusions about how often-”

“She is standing inside our house, Mark,” Sarah interrupted, her voice steady now, cold. “With a key she swore she lost.”

Luke watched his sister reach down and pick up her phone. The group chat was still active, messages of false sympathy continuing to scroll by. The uncropped video file lay ready on the laptop, a complete contradiction of the narrative Eleanor had constructed.
