Part 3: The Speakerphone

Luke watched the dust motes drift through the morning light above the granite island. Sarah’s reflection in the dark kitchen window showed her standing perfectly still, her shoulders square but her chin tilted down. Her thumb hovered over her phone screen, the blue light reflecting in her eyes. She did not draft a long defense or write an emotional paragraph detailing her distress. Instead, she took a high-resolution screenshot of the laptop screen-specifically the section showing the reflection of Eleanor’s face in the double-pane glass, her hand holding the brass key firmly inside the lock. Without a word, she sent the image to Mark’s older sister, Brenda. Mark watched the progress bar on her phone screen complete. His posture was rigid, his arms crossed tightly over his chest as he stood by the pantry. “Sarah, please. Let’s talk about this before you start sending things to my family. We can handle this privately.” Sarah did not answer. She set the phone down on the granite island, screen side up, next to the old brass key. For three minutes, the kitchen was silent except for the low, rhythmic hum of the refrigerator. Luke remained on his stool, his hands resting on the dry dish towel, observing the distance between his sister and her husband. Mark paced three steps to the left, then three steps to the right, his boots clicking softly on the hardwood. His eyes constantly tracked the floorboards, avoiding both Sarah and the laptop. Then, the phone vibrated, sliding an inch across the granite surface. Brenda’s name flashed green on the screen. Sarah tapped the speaker icon. “Brenda?” “Sarah?” Brenda’s voice sounded thin, stripped of its usual cheerful tone. “What is this photo you just sent me? Is that Mom’s face in the door? And is that the key she claimed she lost at the garden center?” Sarah looked directly at Mark, her gaze unwavering. “It is. And she used it to unlock the back door this morning while I was in here. She didn’t stand outside. She stood inside the hallway and filmed me.” There was a sharp, audible intake of breath on the other end of the line. “She told us she was looking through the kitchen window from the patio. She told Dad you were screaming at nothing and that Mark was hiding in the bedroom. She said we needed to get you professional help immediately.” “Look at the door frame behind her in the reflection,” Luke said, leaning closer to the phone. “The trim is interior molding. She was inside the house. The key is turned fully to the left.” A long, heavy pause stretched over the speaker line. “Oh my god,” Brenda whispered. “She lied to all of us. She’s been using that key to enter your house when you aren’t looking.” “Brenda,” Mark stepped forward, his voice cracking slightly as he reached toward the phone. “It might have been an emergency. Maybe she saw Sarah through the glass first and got worried.” “Mark, she had the key in her hand and was turning the lock before the video even started,” Brenda said, her tone growing hard. “And she told the family group chat she was outside. Why did she lie about where she was standing? Why did she lie about having the key?” Before Mark could answer, a text banner popped up at the top of Sarah’s screen. It was a direct message from Eleanor to Mark. Luke read the preview text aloud: “Mark, Brenda just called me screaming about a photo. What did Sarah send her? Delete that video file from the chat immediately.” The pressure in the room shifted instantly. Eleanor wasn’t checking on Sarah’s well-being; she was trying to scrub the evidence of her intrusion before the rest of the family realized she had used the stolen key.
