The realization changed everything. I was not the one who had been saved by a generous administrator. I was the placeholder who kept his entire department funded. Yet, Dean Pendelton was still using the threat of reversing that waiver to force me into hours of uncompensated virtual labor under his constant webcam surveillance.
My phone buzzed on the corner of my desk. A notification from the online portal popped up on my screen. It was a direct message from Pendelton: ‘Haley, I notice you have not logged into the peer-tutoring portal yet today. Your waiver status is still marked as pending administrative review. Please launch your webcam and begin your session.’
I did not open the tutoring application. Instead, I navigated to the portal’s system settings. The academy’s remote proctoring software was designed to run in the background during all administrative transactions to prevent fraud. It automatically recorded and archived any video call where a school official altered a student’s billing status or applied an override code. The files were stored on a secure, read-only server that students could access to review their academic history.
I scrolled back through the archived logs to the fifteenth of last month. My fingers hovered over the trackpad as I located the entry. It was labeled as an administrative audit recording, timestamped at two in the afternoon on the day of the state funding deadline. I clicked the download button, watching the progress bar slowly fill.
While I waited for the file to download, another notification flashed in red at the top of my dashboard. My official graduation audit had been flagged. The status message read: ‘Transfer credits pending final administrative clearance.’ Pendelton was tightening the leash, showing me exactly what would happen if I did not log in and let him watch me work. He wanted me to believe that my entire future was in his hands, that a single keystroke from him could erase years of my hard work.
The download completed. I opened the media file. The video screen split into two windows. On the left was my own webcam feed from three weeks ago, showing me looking confused as Pendelton explained the system status. On the right was Pendelton, sitting in his office, his face illuminated by the blue light of his monitors.
‘Haley,’ his recorded voice said, clear and unmistakable. ‘I am applying waiver code W-908 to your account. This is a complete and final waiver of all outstanding late fees for this academic term. You do not owe the school any balance, and your registration status is fully cleared. Consider it a gift.’
I leaned closer to the screen, replaying the audio. The words were plain as day. In our call today, he had threatened to reverse the waiver and claim I owed the academy four thousand dollars. But on this official, system-logged recording, he had explicitly declared that the waiver was complete, final, and that my balance was entirely cleared.
Even more importantly, I noticed the metadata tag at the bottom of the video file. The authorization code W-908 was logged as a permanent, non-reversible state-funded adjustment. If he tried to reverse it now, it would trigger an automatic discrepancy report to the state auditors, exposing the fact that he had manipulated the enrollment numbers on audit day.
I closed the video player and saved the file to a secure local folder on my hard drive. The evidence was undeniable. I had the exact recording of his verbal reversal, proving his threats were nothing but bluster. But he still controlled the portal access, and he could still freeze my transfer credits before I had a chance to submit them to the university. How could I make him back down and secure my credits without triggering a destructive public battle?
