Part 4: The Quiet Exit

I stared at the red countdown timer on my screen. My hands were steady, but my heart was beating fast. I opened the portal’s direct messaging tool, selected Dean Pendelton’s name, and attached the MP4 file I had downloaded. I dragged the playback slider to the exact mark where he clearly stated the waiver was unconditional and my account was fully cleared.

I typed a short message: *I have attached the audit recording from the fifteenth. The metadata proves this was a permanent, non-reversible state-funded adjustment. If you lock my account, the system will flag the manual reversal to the state funding audit office automatically. Let’s resolve this now.*

I hit send. Three minutes remained on the countdown.

My screen buzzed. The video call window popped up again. I accepted it.

Pendelton’s face was pale. The composure he usually maintained was gone; he was typing furiously, his eyes darting across his screens. ‘This is extortion, Haley. You cannot use a recorded administrative session to threaten an officer of the academy.’

‘I’m not threatening anyone, Dean Pendelton,’ I said. ‘I am setting a boundary. I want to finish my credits and transfer. I did not ask for your waiver, and I do not owe you twenty hours of unpaid labor. You used my enrollment to secure your department’s state grant on audit day. We both know what happens if the state reviews a reversed override on a funding-critical student account.’

He opened his mouth to speak, then stopped. His throat moved as he swallowed. ‘The waiver… it was meant to assist you. I was only trying to ensure our students remained active and engaged. It was a misunderstanding.’

‘I don’t need the explanations,’ I said. ‘I need my transfer credits cleared. If you approve my graduation audit right now, I will download my final transcript, withdraw from the academy, and delete the file from my drive. We will have no further communication.’

He stared at me through the screen, his fingers hovering over his keyboard. The countdown timer read one minute and twelve seconds.

Without saying another word, he reached for his mouse.

On my monitor, the red lockout warning vanished. A new notification popped up in the top right corner: *Graduation Audit: Approved. Transfer Credits: Cleared and Transmitted.*

‘It is done,’ Pendelton said, his voice barely audible.

‘Thank you,’ I said.

I immediately clicked the portal settings, changed my password to a random string of characters to prevent any immediate retaliatory lockouts, and downloaded the finalized, official transcript file to my local drive. Once the PDF was safely saved, I opened the system withdrawal page, uploaded my transfer approval, and clicked submit.

The screen refreshed, displaying a simple message: *Account deactivated by student request.*

I shut my laptop. The green webcam light went dark, and for the first time in weeks, the heavy weight of his surveillance lifted. I had my credits, I had my transfer, and I had left the academy on my own terms, leaving him to deal with the paper trail he had created.
