Part 4: The Trap
Chloe stared at the man standing on the crumpled hood of her sedan, the horror of his words locking every muscle in her body. He wasn’t a vigilante acting on sudden paranoia. This was a calculated financial transaction. Her life, her bodily autonomy, her desperate, secret medical needs-all of it had been reduced to a ten-thousand-dollar payout.
She had to move. If she stayed pinned against the garage door until the police arrived, they would simply validate his claim. She dropped the useless insurance card onto the dashboard. Her right hand slipped down the center console, her trembling fingers gripping the heavy leather of the gearshift.
She ripped the lever straight down into Reverse.
Chloe stomped her foot on the accelerator. The sedan’s engine screamed as the car violently jolted backward. The sudden, jerky reversal ripped the buckling aluminum hood right out from beneath the neighbor’s steel-toed boots.
As the man tumbled backward off the car, his finger tightened on the trigger. A deafening, concussive crack shattered the cabin. The bullet punched a jagged hole through the windshield, whistling mere inches past Chloe’s shoulder before burying itself deep into a packed box in the backseat. The sharp scent of cordite instantly flooded the cold air.
Chloe didn’t stop. She cranked the steering wheel hard to the left, desperate to steer the sedan off the concrete driveway and bypass the massive diesel truck barricading her exit. The rear tires bit into the dew-soaked grass of her front lawn. Mud and torn turf sprayed into the air as the car lurched backward into the darkness.
But the rear seats were packed to the ceiling with her luggage, completely blinding her rearview mirror. She was navigating entirely blind, her foot pinned to the floor in sheer panic. The wet grass offered zero traction. The sedan began to fishtail wildly on the sloping lawn. Before she could correct the spin, the rear quarter panel of her car swung wide and slammed violently into the reinforced steel grill guard of the idling diesel truck.
The impact was catastrophic. The brutal force of the collision whipped Chloe sideways. The driver’s side door buckled inward under the immense pressure, the metal frame folding like crushed tin foil. Her head snapped left, rebounding hard against the rigid plastic of the door pillar. A brilliant flash of white light exploded behind her eyes, followed by a sickening wave of dizziness.
The sedan’s engine gave a final shudder and died. The only sounds left in the quiet neighborhood were the hiss of the ruptured radiator and the steady rumble of the neighbor’s truck.
Chloe blinked through a disorienting haze of pain. Warm blood ran down the side of her temple, dripping steadily off her chin onto her jacket. She tried to shift her weight, to reach for the door handle, but she couldn’t move. A jagged intrusion of crumpled steel from the door panel had pinned her left leg tight against the center console. She was entirely trapped inside the crushed metal box.
Heavy boots crunched slowly over the torn grass. The neighbor stepped into the glare of the headlights, completely unharmed. The rifle hung casually by his side on a tactical sling. He didn’t check on her. He simply reached into his canvas jacket and pulled out a smartphone.
He tapped the screen and put the phone on speaker. Chloe pressed her bleeding forehead against the steering wheel, her breath coming in shallow gasps, entirely powerless to stop what was happening.
“911, what is your emergency?” the dispatcher’s voice crackled from the speaker.
“Yes, operator, I need officers dispatched to my residence immediately,” the neighbor said. His voice was perfectly modulated-calm, authoritative, the picture of a responsible citizen. “I am the victim of an aggravated vehicular assault. A woman backed her vehicle into my property. When I came out to investigate, she attempted to flee over my lawn and intentionally rammed my truck.”
Chloe tried to scream that he was lying, but the crushed metal pressing against her ribs made drawing a full breath impossible. All that escaped her lips was a wet, choking sob.
“I was forced to discharge my weapon once in self-defense under the Stand Your Ground provision when she accelerated toward me,” he continued seamlessly, pacing a deliberate circle around her wrecked sedan. “The suspect’s vehicle is disabled, and she is detained. I am formally placing her under a citizen’s arrest pursuant to the Flight Risk Apprehension Act. She is carrying evidence of an illicit border-crossing attempt to procure restricted medical services.”
He paused, stopping right outside her shattered window. He looked down at Chloe’s bleeding face, his flat eyes utterly devoid of remorse.
“I have secured the suspect,” he told the dispatcher. “And I will be claiming the civilian enforcement bounty. Please send a patrol unit to process the paperwork.”
Chloe closed her eyes as the dispatcher confirmed that police were en route. The flashing lights would arrive in minutes, but they wouldn’t be coming to save her. They were coming to enforce the trap. Her secret, her body, her freedom-they had all been legally commodified. She sat bleeding in the dark wreckage of her ruined escape, listening to the man next door patiently wait to collect his check.
