Part 2: The Buffer Zone

The taller guard’s boots thudded heavily against the polished hardwood, stopping just inches from the center line. He did not reach for Maya’s wrists. Instead, he leaned over the mesh of the volleyball net, looping the thick plastic restraints directly through the white nylon binding. He yanked the zip-ties tight with a sharp, ratcheting zip that echoed off the cinderblock walls. Hanging from the restraints was a bright yellow, laminated placard. It read, in bold black lettering: RESTRICTED.

The guard pointed a gloved finger at Maya’s chest, then pointed down at the ten-foot attack line painted on the floor. “Three-foot buffer,” he announced, his voice flat and devoid of any human warmth. “You do not approach the net. You do not cross this line. You remain contained.”

Marcus expected the referee to intervene, to blow his whistle and eject the man for trespassing on the playing surface. Instead, the referee simply nodded, raising his hand and blowing a short blast on his whistle, making the guard’s absurd decree official. Maya’s lips trembled. She took a slow, agonizing step backward, her sneakers squeaking in the suffocating quiet of the gym.

Marcus’s muscles coiled. He half-stood, the aluminum bleacher groaning in protest beneath his weight. Across the gym, the solid wall of black-shirted parents shifted in perfect, terrifying unison. Fifty pairs of eyes snapped from the court directly to Marcus. Down at the scorer’s table, the second guard unclipped a heavy black radio from his vest and stared Marcus down, his thumb hovering deliberately over the transmit button.

*It’s a trap,* Marcus reminded himself, forcing his lungs to draw a shallow breath. *They want me to lose it. If I step on that floor, she’s alone with them.*

He forced himself to sit back down. He reached toward the sticky floorboards and retrieved the dropped invoice. Flipping the heavy stock over, his stomach plummeted. The back of the page featured a printed schedule of fees, reading like a menu of psychological torture. *Verbal Non-Compliance: $200. Aggressive Posturing: $500. Court Intrusion: $1,000 + Immediate Detainment.* This wasn’t just a threat of physical violence; it was a meticulously calculated revenue stream. They were legally and financially bleeding him while breaking his daughter on a public stage.

The referee blew his whistle to start the match. The opposing server tossed the ball and struck it with vicious intent. She did not aim for the empty corners of the court; she aimed the heavy topspin directly at Maya’s face. Maya instinctively threw her forearms up, popping the ball high into the air toward the setter. Muscle memory taking over, Maya took two quick steps forward to prepare for an approach jump, her toe brushing the hardwood just behind the yellow placard dangling from the net.

“Proximity violation!” the taller guard barked from the sideline.

The referee’s whistle shrieked instantly. Point awarded to the opposing team.

Maya froze, her chest heaving as her eyes darted to the sideline. Coach Sarah, a fiery woman who routinely fought referees over millimeter line calls, stood rigidly by the water coolers. She stared intently down at her clipboard, her knuckles white, refusing to meet Maya’s pleading gaze. The complicity was absolute.

The isolation spread across the court like a virus. During the next volley, Maya’s own teammates subtly shifted away from her. The libero stepped out of her passing lane. The setter positioned herself further to the right edge of the net. A gaping, empty void opened up on the hardwood, leaving Maya trapped alone in the center. The unspoken message was deafening: no one was going to help her, and no one wanted to be in the splash zone when the guards finally made their move.

A cold shadow fell over Marcus. The man who had ambushed him at the gymnasium doors-the one wearing the laminated badge and the arrogant smirk-was now standing at the very edge of Marcus’s bleacher row. In his right hand, he held a sleek, black mobile payment terminal. The digital screen cast a pale blue glow across his chin. He tapped the glass twice, and the display flashed an angry red. The $400 figure vanished, instantly replaced by $600.00.

“Buffer zone violation,” the man whispered. The gym was so terrifyingly quiet that his low voice carried effortlessly to Marcus’s ears. “I told you we needed a card on file at the door, Dad. The meter is running.”

Marcus stared at the glowing red numbers, his fingernails digging crescents into his palms. “You have no jurisdiction here. She’s a child playing a game.”

“She’s an active liability,” the man corrected, stepping sideways into the narrow aisle, effectively blocking Marcus’s only path down to the court. “And if this balance hits a thousand dollars, my guys have full authorization to pull her off the floor and initiate transport protocols. You want her to finish the set? Swipe the card.”

Down on the hardwood, the score climbed rapidly. Every time Maya moved, the guards twitched, their hands resting on their utility belts. Every time she hesitated to avoid the restricted zone, the opposing team scored another uncontested point. The wall of black shirts remained motionless, their silence a crushing physical weight pressing the oxygen out of the room.

The opposing team’s captain stepped behind the service line. She grinned, tossing the ball low. Instead of a looping serve, she drove a fast, flat line-drive aimed directly at Maya’s shins. Panicking, Maya dove forward to dig the ball before it hit the wood. She managed to pop it up, saving the point, but her momentum carried her sliding across the slick floor. Her knee pads burned against the varnish as she slipped straight past the painted line, sliding deep into the guard’s restricted zone.

The referee’s whistle blew a long, frantic, continuous blast.

Both guards immediately drew fresh sets of heavy plastic zip-ties from their vests. They stepped over the boundary line simultaneously, converging on Maya as she scrambled wildly on the floor, trying to push herself backward.

The man in the aisle lunged forward, shoving the glowing payment terminal directly into Marcus’s chest. “Time’s up,” he said.
