Part 2: The Ultimatum

The camera’s strobe fired one last time, freezing the bizarre tableau in a blast of stark white light. The flash briefly blinded Marcus, leaving purple spots dancing across his vision, but his hand did not waver. The dense muscle of Julian Vance’s forearm yielded under his fingertips, the expensive wool of the suit sleeve bunching up against Marcus’s tightening knuckles. He could feel the rapid, sudden spike of Vance’s pulse pounding against his palm. For a horrifying, suspended second, nobody in the boardroom breathed.

The PR director, Sarah, shifted uncomfortably on the sidelines. Her polished heels clicked against the hardwood as she took a tentative half-step forward. She leaned, peering past the photographer’s shoulder, her brow furrowing as she tried to interpret the scene. Marcus forced a wide, terrifyingly bright smile onto his face, stretching his cheeks until the muscles trembled. He yanked Vance an inch closer, masking the violent physical restraint as an intense, aggressive display of corporate brotherhood.

“We are firmly anchored to this company’s future,” Marcus announced loudly, his voice echoing with a strange, breathless edge.

The photographer, oblivious to the hostage situation playing out in plain sight, grinned and snapped another rapid-fire series of photos. “Love it! Great energy!” he called out.

Under the mechanical clatter of the shutter, Marcus leaned into Vance’s personal space. He kept his unnerving smile plastered in place for the lens but dropped his voice into a low, vibrating whisper meant only for the CEO. “Tier one experimental override. You have the executive authority to bypass the medical committee, Julian.”

Vance stiffened like he had been electrocuted. The CEO tried to subtly wrench his arm free, masking the movement as an adjustment of his posture, but Marcus’s grip was anchored by pure, unadulterated panic. The digital invoice burned in Marcus’s mind. Vance hissed through clenched, perfectly veneered teeth. “Have you completely lost your mind? Let go of me, you’re bruising the bone.”

A dark, intrusive thought flared in Marcus’s racing mind. He had high-level access now. He knew the routing numbers for the company’s discretionary diversity fund. He could walk out of this shoot, log into his secure terminal, and quietly wire the eighty-four thousand dollars to the clinic’s surgical department before the banks closed at five. He could steal it. It would be a seamless digital transfer. But the firm’s brutal quarterly audit was only three weeks away. Embezzlement on that scale meant a federal indictment. It meant ruining his hard-won career, permanently voiding whatever health coverage he still had, and risking years in a state penitentiary. He couldn’t take care of the medical crisis from a prison cell. He had to do this legally. He had to find another way to force the CEO’s hand right here, on the record.

“Eighty-four thousand, three hundred dollars,” Marcus murmured, ignoring Vance’s struggle. He smiled wider as the flash went off again. “That is the out-of-pocket demand your self-funded insurance plan just sent me. You are going to sign a bypass override today, Julian. Right now. Or I turn to that journalist taking notes in the corner, and I tell her exactly how this progressive, forward-thinking company leaves its people to die.”

Vance’s eyes darted frantically toward the journalist. She was currently flipping through her notepad, entirely unaware of the extortion happening three feet away. “This is career suicide,” Vance whispered back, his polished facade cracking to reveal a simmering, indignant rage. “You’re done, Marcus. The second this camera is put away, security is clearing your desk.”

“If I leave without that override, I leave making a scene that tanks the stock price by Monday morning,” Marcus countered, his thumb pressing harder into a nerve cluster on Vance’s arm. “I will scream about the self-funded insurance scam. The diversity optics you love so much? I will turn them into a national PR nightmare about a discarded, bankrupt token executive who was used for a photo op and left with an impossible medical debt.”

Sarah finally sensed the toxic shift in the room’s atmosphere. The smile on Vance’s face was no longer a smile; it was a tight, agonized grimace. “Okay, gentlemen, I think we absolutely have the shot!” she called out with forced cheerfulness. She clapped her hands together, her eyes locked suspiciously on Marcus’s white-knuckled grip. “Let’s give Julian a breather, shall we?”

Marcus released the arm slowly, letting his fingers uncurl one by one. Vance immediately snatched his limb back. The CEO rubbed his forearm, his chest heaving with shallow, angry breaths. He masked his fury with a manufactured cough, turning his back deliberately away from the journalist to hide his expression.

Vance adjusted his imported silk cuffs, refusing to look Marcus in the eye. “Sarah,” Vance said, his voice tight but dangerously controlled. “Please escort our media guests to the lobby. Marcus and I need to have an urgent, private discussion in my office regarding his… continued role in our initiatives.”

The journalist shook Vance’s uninjured left hand, thanked him for the access, and exited with the photographer and the highly anxious PR director. The heavy glass boardroom doors clicked shut behind them, the magnetic lock engaging with a soft thud. The sudden silence in the executive suite was deafening. Marcus braced himself, preparing to negotiate the terms of his override.

But Vance didn’t walk toward his private office. Instead, he backed away from the conference table, putting distance between himself and Marcus. He stopped in front of the wall console. His hand hovered over the red emergency button that directly summoned the building’s armed executive security detail.

“You made a massive miscalculation,” Vance said. His voice dropped all pretense of corporate warmth, revealing something cold, calculating, and deeply vicious. “You have exactly sixty seconds to walk out of this building before I have you arrested for assault.”
