Part 4: The Automated Release
At 14:36:12, the clinic’s automated compliance protocol took complete control of Station 4. The security footage shows the screen at Vance’s workstation turning a solid, clinical gray. As the investigator reviewing this incident, I noted the immediate shift in Vance’s posture. He pulls his hands away from the keyboard and rests them on his lap, staring blankly at the monitor. The clinic’s automated transfer protocol bypasses Vance’s terminal once the bluff is formally registered as a compliance violation. The manual override flag on David Miller’s asset is purged by the regional database. Because Vance could not provide a verified compliance code, the automated protocol classified the hold as an unauthorized retention of a posthuman asset.
Under the clinic’s strict digital transfer guidelines, the system automatically bypasses the local terminal to prevent staff from keeping physical custody of disputed items. Behind the counter, a low mechanical hum starts up. The metal shutter of the physical depository slides open with a sharp click. The pneumatic delivery tube drops the brushed titanium Model-7 Consciousness Drive into the metal dispenser tray at the front of the station. The drive sits in the tray, its clean metallic surface catching the fluorescent lights of the lobby.
Vance’s terminal screen flashes a final administrative notification: User Credentials Restricted. Administrative Rights Suspended. Level 1 Read-Only Status Active. The system has applied a permanent restriction to Vance’s credentials, preventing him from ever issuing manual holds or accessing client accounts without direct supervisor override.
Sarah Miller looks at the drive, then up at Vance. ‘Please complete the transfer,’ she says. Her voice is calm, devoid of any anger or excitement.
Vance does not look her in the eyes. The security camera captures him reaching into the metal dispenser tray. His hand is steady, but his movements are slow and deliberate. He picks up the titanium Model-7 drive and slides it under the glass partition, placing it directly into Sarah’s waiting hands.
Sarah takes the drive, checking the serial number on the back of the casing against her terminal pad. She places it into a small, padded transport case and zips it shut. Beside her, Marcus Thorne’s terminal flashes green. The automated bypass has also cleared his wife’s telemetry file, printing a release receipt at the adjacent printer. Marcus grabs the paper, gives Vance a long look, and walks toward the exit. Sarah secures her case, steps back from the counter, and walks toward the lobby doors. She does not offer a parting word to Vance, nor does she look back at the intake desk. The security footage shows her exiting into the parking lot, the transport case held securely at her side.
Behind the counter, Vance remains seated. He stares at the read-only warning on his screen, his daily asset retention metrics showing a complete reset to zero. The administrative record is locked. The clinic’s automated system has restored order, leaving only the digital trace of a failed bluff and a permanently restricted clerk.
