Part 4: The Purge Protocol

The siren continued to drill into Maya’s skull, a relentless, shrieking rhythm that matched the frantic pounding of her heart. She stared at the encrypted messages on the glowing screen, the sheer weight of Chloe’s betrayal anchoring her to the linoleum floor. The safety flag, the sanctimonious lecture, the violent assault-it had all been a calculated distraction. Chloe wasn’t trying to save her; she was orchestrating a heist at the loading dock.

Maya’s thumb hovered over the screen, desperate to scroll back, to take a screenshot, to forward the undeniable proof of the theft to her own device. But the moment she tapped the glass, the heavy wooden double doors of the student union vestibule burst open.

“Hey! Stop right there!”

Two campus security officers in neon-yellow jackets charged into the flashing red light, their heavy boots squeaking violently against the polished floor. Right behind them, looking breathless and terrified, was Marcus, their dorm’s Resident Advisor.

The instant the first officer’s voice echoed through the room, Chloe transformed.

The feral, calculating predator on her hands and knees vanished. Chloe’s shoulders violently collapsed inward. She let out a high-pitched, warbling gasp and curled into a tight, trembling ball.

“Help me!” Chloe wailed, her voice cracking with perfectly manufactured terror. She pointed a shaking, manicured finger at Maya. “Please! She just went crazy! I tried to stop her from breaking the locker, and she attacked me!”

Maya froze, the glowing phone still clutched in her hand. She looked down at herself. Her oversized sweater was ripped at the collar. Deep, bloody scratch marks tracked down her forearms from where Chloe’s nails had gouged her skin. She looked wild, desperate, and dangerous-the exact image of an unhinged thief.

“Drop the phone. Now.” The taller security officer stepped between them, his hand resting defensively on his heavy utility belt. He positioned his body to shield Chloe, who was now burying her face in her hands and sobbing loud, theatrical tears into Marcus’s shoulder.

“You don’t understand,” Maya said, her voice shaking as she held up the device. “Look at the screen! She set me up. She’s coordinating with someone at the loading dock to steal my package. The messages are right here!”

“I said put the phone on the floor and step back,” the officer barked, his tone leaving absolutely no room for negotiation.

Maya desperately tapped the screen, trying to keep the encrypted chat awake so the officer could see the damning text. But in her panic, her thumb grazed the side button. The screen went black. A tiny padlock icon flashed for a fraction of a second before the device required a passcode to unlock. The evidence was gone.

“Maya, just do what he says,” Marcus pleaded, his voice thick with profound disappointment. He wasn’t looking at the blood on Maya’s arms. He was looking at the shattered, spider-webbed glass of the locker terminal and the heavy wire cutters resting on the floor just inches from Maya’s boots.

“She brought the cutters!” Maya yelled, her throat raw. “She hit the screen!”

“She took my phone!” Chloe sobbed into the RA’s jacket. “I was just trying to call for help!”

Defeated, her hands trembling violently, Maya placed the locked phone onto the linoleum and took two slow steps backward.

At that exact moment, a sharp, mechanized clunk echoed from compartment forty-two.

Maya whipped her head around. The digital timer on her own phone, lying abandoned near the metal lockers, had ticked down to zero. The emergency purge protocol was complete. Through the narrow gap in the descending steel shutter, Maya heard the motorized whine of the internal carousel rotating. A heavy thud reverberated through the steel chassis as the discreet cardboard bubble mailer was violently dropped into the secure, inaccessible return bin at the bottom of the machine.

“No,” Maya whispered, the air leaving her lungs. The deal. The money. Her entire lifeline. All of it had just fallen into the dark.

The second security officer moved past Maya to retrieve Chloe’s phone, handing it back to the weeping girl. Chloe took it with shaking hands, holding it tightly against her chest. She peeked out from behind Marcus’s shoulder, meeting Maya’s gaze for one fleeting second. Beneath the fake, watery tears, Chloe’s eyes were cold, triumphant, and utterly merciless.

“We need to escort you to the campus safety office,” the first officer told Maya, gesturing toward the exit. “We’re going to need your student ID, and we’ll be contacting the disciplinary board.”

Maya didn’t fight as they guided her out of the vestibule, leaving Chloe behind to spin the rest of her fabricated story. The adrenaline was draining from Maya’s veins, replaced by a hollow, sickening ache in her ribs and a sharp stinging across her clawed arms.

As she stepped out into the chilly afternoon air, her own phone vibrated in her pocket. The officer allowed her to retrieve it.

Maya stared at the cracked screen. The campus logistics app had updated. The red emergency banner was gone, replaced by a sterile, gray notification box.

Notice: Level 3 Tamper Protocol Activated. Unclaimed package #8804 has been purged into the high-security holding bin. Due to the severe safety flag and active physical damage to university property, this item is suspended from local courier retrieval. The package contents will be automatically destroyed by the logistics administrative team in 48 hours.

Maya swiped the notification away, leaving only her empty home screen. There was no manual extraction at the loading dock for Chloe, but there was no salvation for Maya either. The package was gone, her account was permanently locked, and she was left bleeding in the courtyard, waiting to explain a truth no one would ever believe.
