The Crusade to Expel Clara Vance – Part 4

Part 4: The Silent Lockout

Through the glass partition of the boardroom, Marcus Reed watched Dr. Arthur Vance sit down at the director’s terminal. Arthur inserted his administrator keycard into the slot beside the keyboard. The terminal’s indicator light glowed a steady, reassuring blue. On the wall monitor inside the boardroom, the final submission screen displayed the two genetic profiles side-by-side: Clara’s recent diagnostic file and the archived sequence from Lab Report V-9082.

Arthur did not pause. He clicked the final execution button to submit the complaint and initiate Clara’s lockout.

Instantly, the progress wheel on the board monitor began to spin. The automated compliance network started its sweep, searching the database for any matching genetic markers associated with the unauthorized edit. The script crawled through the active directory, searching for the unique sequence patterns detailed in Lab Report V-9082. The genetic markers in the archived report matched Arthur’s own lineage exactly.

Marcus watched the screen on his own terminal. The progress wheel stopped. A series of system messages appeared in quick succession: ‘Match Found. Progenitor Lineage Contamination Confirmed. Active Administrator Profile Linked to Unauthorized Genetic Modification.’

There was no alarm, no siren, and no warning chime. Inside the boardroom, the terminal screen in front of Arthur suddenly flashed red, then transitioned to a flat grey. The steady blue light on the keycard reader next to his desk turned to a blinking amber, flashed three times, and then went completely dark.

Arthur remained seated, his hand still resting on the mouse. He pulled his keycard out of the slot and reinserted it. The reader did not light up. He swiped it again, but the screen remained locked, displaying a single line of text: ‘Access Revoked. Compliance Protocol 404-B.’

Arthur stood up, his face pale under the fluorescent lights. He walked to the boardroom door and pressed his hand against the scanner. The scanner remained dark, refusing to read his print. He pulled his system keycard from his pocket and pressed it against the wall reader. The reader emitted a single, dull click, but the latch did not release.

Clara picked up her cardboard box from the lab bench. She walked toward the main exit, her footsteps quiet on the floor. She did not look back at the boardroom. As she approached the main laboratory door, the sensor registered her presence and slid open, allowing her to pass through into the outer lobby.

Inside the locked boardroom, Arthur tapped the glass, looking toward the technicians. None of them moved. Marcus Reed sorted the remaining paper files on his desk, closed the database tab on his screen, and shut down his terminal for the evening. The silence in the laboratory remained unbroken, marked only by the steady, automated hum of the cooling fans.
