Part 4: The Cold Lockout

Sarah pressed a key on her laptop. The projector screen flickered, switching from the slide presentation to the live administrator console of the Main Shared Directory.

David observed the change in the room’s lighting as the bright blue of the slide deck was replaced by the stark black-and-grey interface of the version control system. The other associates at the table leaned forward, their eyes tracking the rows of system logs.

The top line of the active log read: `M-Model_Final.pkg – Owner: Elena_R`.

Directly below it, a red entry dated Saturday at 11:42 PM showed the extraction request: `Action: Export to Local Device | Initiated by: M_Vance_Proxy via Credentials: A_Vance`.

Beside this entry was a yellow warning icon: `Flag: Missing Multi-Factor Token | Status: Non-Compliant Extraction`.

Elena did not speak. She remained seated, her hands still resting flat on the table, her eyes fixed on the red line on the projector screen.

Arthur Vance stood up, leaning his palms on the table. His voice remained low, though his shoulders were rigid. “This log simply indicates that my office administrative credentials were used to compile the final package. It is standard department protocol for the lead to finalize documentation before a presentation.”

“The policy manual,” David said, speaking for the first time in ten minutes, “restricts export privileges of unreleased modules to the primary author. Section four, page eight.”

David looked down at his notes, then back at Arthur.

Arthur’s fingers pressed harder against the table, the tips turning white. “The project is a department asset, not an individual one. The administration of these files is under my authority.”

He reached for his laptop to close the connection, but before his hand reached the keyboard, the projector screen updated automatically.

A system notification window appeared on the screen, overlaying the administrator log in bright white text.

`System Alert: Administrative Security Lockout Protocol Active.`
`Reason: Unauthorized credential sharing and file extraction dispute.`
`Target Accounts: A_Vance (Disabled), Marcus_T (Disabled).`

A corresponding soft chime sounded from Arthur’s laptop. The screen of his device instantly went black, replaced by a grey login prompt with red text: *Account deactivated by security administrator.*

Marcus’s tablet, lying open on the table, went black at the same moment. The junior assistant slowly folded his printed cue card in half, then in half again, and tucked it into his breast pocket.

Arthur Vance remained standing for a moment. He did not raise his voice, and he did not look at Marcus or Elena. He closed his laptop with a quiet click, disconnected the power cable, and wrapped it neatly.

“We will reconvene when this administrative matter is cleared,” Arthur said.

Nobody at the table stood up. Elena picked up the blue project folder, closed it, and placed it in her bag. David watched the projector screen revert to the default system wallpaper. He drew a final line under his notes, closed his pad, and capped his pen. The room was silent except for the low hum of the cooling fan as the system automatically powered down the projector.
