Part 2: Running on Fumes
His fingers dug into the thin cotton of her t-shirt, the heavy grip of a man accustomed to forcing compliance. The stale scent of peppermint and tobacco washed over her face again, turning her stomach. Chloe did not think; she simply reacted. She dropped her left shoulder and twisted her torso violently toward the rusted metal of the gas pump. The sudden, frantic movement broke his hold, his rough fingernails scraping painfully across her collarbone.
Chloe stumbled backward, her worn sneakers sliding dangerously on the oily concrete.
“Hey!” the man barked, his conversational tone vanishing instantly. He raised the heavy black radio to his mouth, pressing his thumb hard against the transmission button. “Base, I have a non-compliant female at the rust pumps on Route 9. State University tags, possible border runner. Moving to detain.”
He dropped the radio back into his heavy vest pocket and lunged. Chloe scrambled around the side of the pump, putting the rusted casing between them. Her canvas tote bag slipped down her arm, banging against her hip. She eyed the driver’s side door of the silver sedan, calculating the distance. He was closer, his heavy boots thudding against the concrete. If she made a run for the handle, he would tackle her against the door frame before she could even get the key into the ignition.
“You are making this a lot worse for yourself, sweetheart,” he said, pacing slowly around the pump to cut off her angle to the vehicle. “And for whoever owns that sedan. I have already got the plate and the faculty permit logged in the lens.”
Chloe’s eyes darted to the heavy-duty tripod standing a few yards away near the storefront. The camera’s red recording light blinked steadily, capturing the rear of the sedan in perfect, high-resolution focus. If he transmitted that digital footage to whatever network of watchers he worked for, Professor Aris would be fired, arrested, or worse, before the sun even set. The man did not just have her trapped; he had the undeniable visual proof of the crimson-and-gold sticker.
She absolutely could not leave that camera intact.
Feinting to her left as if making a desperate break for the highway, Chloe grabbed the plastic squeegee bucket resting on the edge of the pump island. She hurled the heavy basin directly at his shins. A gallon of foul, black-tinged soapy water splashed across his heavy work boots and the lower half of his neon vest. The man cursed loudly, slipping on the sudden slickness of the wet concrete, his arms flailing wildly to maintain his balance.
Chloe did not go for the car. She sprinted in the opposite direction, closing the distance to the tripod in three frantic strides.
“Stop right there!” the man shouted, regaining his footing with a wet, heavy squeak of rubber on concrete.
Chloe grabbed the thick central column of the tripod. It was heavier than she expected, constructed of dense, professional-grade aluminum. She hoisted the entire rig into the air, feeling the unbalanced weight of the expensive camera mounted on top. The man was charging toward her, his face flushed dark red with sudden fury, reaching into his back pocket for something metallic that glinted menacingly in the harsh afternoon sunlight.
With a loud, desperate cry, Chloe swung the tripod like a heavy club, slamming the camera head-first into the unforgiving metal pole of the gas station’s structural canopy. The violent impact sent a shockwave up her arms, vibrating painfully into her teeth. The camera casing shattered with a sickening crunch. Shards of black plastic, pulverized glass from the telephoto lens, and the heavy battery pack exploded across the hot pavement.
She did not stop to admire her work. She threw the bent, tangled aluminum legs of the tripod directly into the charging man’s path, forcing him to hurdle the wreckage. He tripped, coming down hard on one knee with a heavy, breathless grunt.
Chloe spun around and sprinted for the passenger side of the silver sedan. She ripped the door handle open and threw herself headfirst across the center console. Her ribs bruised sharply against the plastic armrest as she scrambled frantically into the driver’s seat. She slammed her hand against the power lock button just as a heavy fist pounded against the driver’s side window.
The man was right outside the glass, his face twisted in absolute rage, spit flying from his lips as he yelled muffled curses she could not hear. In his right hand, he clutched a heavy steel flashlight. He raised it high above his shoulder, bringing the heavy, reinforced handle down hard against the glass. The driver’s window spider-webbed instantly, a terrifying mosaic of cracked safety glass appearing directly in front of Chloe’s face.
She jammed the key into the ignition with a shaking hand and twisted it hard. The engine sputtered, whining in desperate protest before finally roaring to life. The glowing yellow fuel light on the dashboard immediately glared at her, the needle pinned dangerously beneath the red line.
The man raised the heavy flashlight for a second strike, aiming directly for the weakened center of the shattered glass.
Chloe threw the gearshift into drive and slammed her foot onto the accelerator. The sedan lurched forward abruptly, the tires squealing as they searched for traction in the heavy dust and loose gravel. The man scrambled backward, narrowly avoiding the side mirror as the car tore aggressively away from the pump island.
She did not look back until she hit the cracked, sun-baked asphalt of the two-lane highway. Her chest heaved, pulling in ragged, shallow breaths. The steering wheel shook violently beneath her trembling hands. The camera was destroyed, but as she glanced into the rearview mirror, a fresh, paralyzing wave of ice poured into her veins.
The man in the neon vest was standing in the center of the road, holding his radio to his mouth, tracking her exact trajectory. And from the opposite direction, pulling aggressively off the dusty shoulder to meet him, was a dark, modified pickup truck outfitted with a blinding amber lightbar. The truck did not stop at the gas station. It executed a sharp, violent U-turn, its massive tires kicking up a thick cloud of white dust as it pointed its heavy steel grill straight down the highway, falling into the lane directly behind her.
Chloe looked down at the glowing red fuel light illuminating the dark dashboard. She had no money, a shattered window, a completely empty gas tank, and a hunter accelerating rapidly in her rearview mirror.
