Part 3: The Indelible Mark
The terrifying, high-pitched metallic whine of the fractured steel cylinder vibrated straight through the slick stage floorboards and deeply into Maya’s bruised kneecaps.
The security guards in black tactical gear were a tumbling mass of heavy limbs. Two of them went down hard, their boots losing all traction in the expanding violet foam, crashing shoulder-first into the ruined white floral arrangements. A third guard tried to grab Maya’s collar but skidded violently, his legs flying completely out from under him as he hit the wet wood.
Maya kept her trembling arms wrapped around the screaming cylinder, her bare fingers going numb from the freezing vapor leaking out of the cracked brass valve. Her stomach cramped with a sudden, vicious sharpness, a violent physical reminder of her twenty-two days of starvation, leaving her peripheral vision swimming with dark, static-filled edges. She could barely hold her head up.
“Get up! Get her up, you useless idiots!”
The voice sliced cleanly through the ambient roar of the panicked crowd. Maya blinked away the freezing sweat stinging her eyes. The floor manager-the PR executive in the sharp charcoal suit who had coldly berated her in the shadows just minutes ago-was storming onto the stage.
His polished, unbothered facade was entirely gone. His glowing wireless headset dangled by a thin wire around his neck, and his face was flushed a violent, blotchy red. He ignored the slipping guards, navigating the slick floorboards with desperate, wide stances. He wasn’t even looking at Maya; his horrified, bulging eyes were fixed purely on the front row of VIP tables, where the wealthy investors were slipping and crawling over one another to escape the toxic neon puddle.
“My gala!” he screamed, his voice cracking hysterically over the whine of the tank. “My career! You pathetic, starving bitch, you’ve ruined me!”
He lunged at Maya, his polished leather shoes sliding slightly before he caught his balance. He didn’t wait for the guards to recover. He dropped to his knees right in the thick of the corrosive violet foam and grabbed Maya by the shoulders of her oversized catering vest. He shook her violently, his perfectly manicured nails digging painfully through the thin canvas and into her collarbones.
Maya’s head snapped back. The heavy steel tank slipped entirely out of her weakened grip, coming to rest on the floorboards between them. The high-pitched whine was rapidly escalating into a deafening shriek. The metal casing was vibrating so violently it blurred against the wood.
“Turn it off!” the executive spat, flecks of saliva flying from his lips and hitting Maya’s cheek. He reached down, frantically wrapping his bare, trembling hands around the freezing, cracked brass valve to try and twist it shut. “I’ll kill you! I’ll see you rot in a cell for the rest of your worthless life!”
Maya slumped against the wet floorboards, her muscles absolutely spent. But her heavy, exhausted eyes tracked his frantic hands. He was grabbing the primary flow valve, completely unaware of the secondary safety shear-pin located at the very base of the manifold.
When Maya had modified the tank in her freezing apartment, she had layered the chemicals. The violet foam was just the dispersal agent, the surface layer meant for maximum volume. The core of the cylinder-held back by a pressurized baffle and that single, heavy steel pin-contained the undiluted, pure concentrate of the security dye. It was a heavy, indelible pitch-black sludge, mathematically designed to permanently bond with human skin and completely destroy anything it touched.
The executive gritted his teeth, tearing at the broken primary valve, screaming breathless curses at her. He was leaning directly over the top of the screaming cylinder.
Maya didn’t have the strength to stand. She didn’t have the breath to speak. But she had just enough energy left in her freezing, dye-stained fingers to reach out.
She bypassed his frantic, struggling hands, slipping her thumb firmly into the metal ring of the secondary shear-pin.
The executive looked down, his wide eyes locking onto her hand. For a fraction of a second, his screaming stopped. Pure, uncomprehending confusion flickered across his sweating face.
Maya pulled the pin.
The cracked brass manifold didn’t just open; it blew completely off the top of the cylinder with the concussive, deafening force of a mortar shell. The heavy metal fitting shot past the executive’s ear, shattering the remains of the acrylic podium behind him into jagged plastic shrapnel.
The sudden decompression unleashed the core payload. A high-pressure, solid jet of thick, indelible black dye erupted straight up from the open neck of the tank. It struck the PR executive squarely in the center of his chest and face with the devastating force of a fire hose.
The sheer impact threw him backward off his knees. He hit the slick floorboards hard, sliding backward through the foam. The massive plume of pitch-black liquid continued its violent arc, raining down in heavy, oily droplets over the panicked stragglers in the VIP front row, painting their screaming faces and ruined designer clothing in absolute, impenetrable darkness.
The steel tank expelled its last gasp of pressure in a hollow, wheezing cough, then went completely still.
Maya dragged herself backward, her shoulder blades hitting the cold metal scaffolding of the stage wing. She watched the executive.
He pushed himself up onto his hands and knees. He was completely saturated. The expensive charcoal suit was plastered flat to his skin, dripping with thick, black sludge. The indelible dye clung heavily to his hair, soaking into his scalp, running into his eyes and mouth. The sharp, acrid chemical stench of the concentrate filled the ballroom, burning the back of Maya’s throat.
The executive raised his trembling hands, staring blankly at his palms. They were stained a deep, unnatural obsidian. He wiped frantically at his cheek, but the dye had already bonded instantly to the pores of his skin. It wasn’t just a stain; it looked as though his flesh had rapidly necrotized.
“No,” he whimpered. The sound was small, broken, entirely stripped of his former corporate authority. “No, no, no, no.”
He rubbed his hands violently against his face. It did nothing but smear the black sludge deeper into his tear-filled eyes.
Then, something behind his eyes shattered.
A guttural, animalistic shriek ripped from his throat. It was a sound of pure, mindless terror. He grabbed the lapels of his ruined suit and ripped them apart, popping the buttons off his shirt in a frantic, wild attempt to get the stained fabric away from his body. But the dye had soaked all the way through, permanently painting his chest black.
He began to claw at his own face. His fingernails dragged ruthlessly across his cheeks, breaking the skin, leaving bloody, black-stained tracks down his jawline. He didn’t seem to feel the physical pain. He was hyperventilating, his eyes wide and unseeing, completely consumed by a blind, terrifying rage.
“Get it off!” he screamed, his voice shredding itself on the final word.
He threw himself sideways, crashing heavily into the shattered base of the acrylic podium. He grabbed a jagged piece of the broken plastic and began scrubbing it frantically against his forearm, tearing his own skin to ribbons in a deranged, bloody attempt to scrape the permanent color away. Blood mixed with the black sludge, pooling darkly on the stage. He smashed his forehead against the heavy flight case next to him, once, twice, three times, screaming incoherently, punishing his own body in a desperate, impossible war against the indelible mark of his absolute ruin.
The remaining wealthy guests in the ballroom froze, their panicked screams dying in their throats. The security guards stopped trying to stand. The entire cavernous space went dead silent, save for the horrifying, wet sounds of the executive weeping and violently tearing at his own flesh on the ruined stage.
Maya sat in the dark shadows of the wings, her empty stomach completely numb, watching the invulnerable, pristine facade of the elite tear itself to bloody shreds in front of her.
