Part 4: The Administrative Lock
The transition slide cleared, and Julian Mercer’s avatar returned to the center screen, its digital face composed once more into a look of heavy, rehearsed solemnity.
“In closing,” Julian’s voice echoed through the stream, public and polished, “we ask that you continue to support the foundation that Arthur built, a legacy that Elena and I are proud to shepherd together in his memory.”
Claire Vance did not wait for the final sentence to finish. Her hand moved across the Vance Tech Stream Deck with deliberate, silent precision. She tapped the routing configuration, directing the captured audio file-Julian’s private instructions to his associate-directly into the foundation board’s private monitor bridge, which was active on the administrative side-channel.
On the side monitor, three board members’ accounts, flagged with executive credentials, immediately logged active downloads of the audio file. The green download status lights flashed in rapid succession.
Julian’s avatar gestured, a smooth sweep of the hand. “We thank you all for-”
The audio from his VR link went silent. Claire had pressed the input-disable button. With another keystroke, she disconnected the remote VR link from the St. Jude’s digital server. Julian’s avatar vanished instantly, replaced by a grey, standard graphic containing the text: ‘REMOTE FEED TERMINATED BY ADMINISTRATOR.’
Down in the studio, Elena Sterling slowly released her hands. Her shoulders, previously rigid, lowered. She took a slow, deep breath, her eyes moving from the podium to the observation glass of the control booth. She did not smile, but the tension in her jaw was gone.
In the booth, the server rack hummed, a steady, low vibration that filled the silence.
Claire clicked the final report tool. On the screen, the system compiled the incident log:
‘Incident Log ID: ST-001192-A.
Source IP: Mercer_Remote_VR_09.
Action: Unauthorized database write attempt blocked. Audio monitor capture attached.
Status: Feed permanently disconnected. Event credentials revoked.’
Claire signed the digital form with her operator key, locking the file from further editing. The document flashed blue, indicating it had been successfully transmitted to the foundation’s legal counsel and probate registers.
Mara watched the donation tracker on the public screen slow, then stabilize. The stream chat, which had been filled with questions about Julian’s abrupt exit, quieted as the standard memorial credits began to roll. The care boundary was documented, sealed, and beyond Julian’s reach.
Downstairs, Elena stood up from the velvet chair. She did not look at the prompter, which had gone black, but walked toward the exit door, her steps even and unhurried. The digital chapel lights began to dim one by one as the automated shutdown sequence initiated. On the primary screen, the system began its post-stream backup. A prompt appeared: ‘Session closed. All administrator action logs committed to immutable storage.’ Claire tapped the confirmation button. The green light on the console shifted to amber, indicating the session was officially offline. The foundation board’s active tokens were listed as terminated on the status panel.
