Part 3: The Unedited Tape
Elias stared at the threatening text message on his phone, the grainy satellite image of his home burning into his retinas. The heavy silence inside the shop felt like a pressurized cabin right before a rupture. He looked toward the thick steel door of the inventory room where his daughter, Lily, was hiding. His chest tightened with a suffocating, helpless rage. The vigilante mob outside his garage wasn’t moving; they were just waiting, a silent blockade severing him from the rest of the world.
A sudden, frantic rattling at the rear alley access door made Elias jump. He instinctively grabbed a heavy steel crowbar from his towering red tool chest and crept down the dark back corridor, his boots silent on the concrete.
The heavy deadbolt clicked, and the reinforced door violently shoved inward. A teenager in a dirt-stained varsity baseball jacket tumbled into the dim hallway, gasping for breath. Elias recognized him instantly. It was Dave, a local high school pitcher whose family brought their vehicles to the shop for routine oil changes. Dave was trembling, his clothes covered in mud and burrs from crawling through the overgrown drainage ditch behind the property to bypass the mob out front. In his shaking hands, the boy clutched a silver laptop.
Elias lowered the crowbar, demanding to know what the boy was doing sneaking into a besieged building.
Dave slammed the laptop onto a nearby stack of spare tire rims. He choked back a sob, apologizing repeatedly, saying he couldn’t let Elias take the fall for this anymore. Dave popped open the screen, his fingers frantically tapping the trackpad. He clicked open a massive video file.
Dave explained that this was the full, unedited game tape from last month’s district baseball championship. He skipped the timestamp forward. Elias leaned in, his eyes locked on the glowing screen.
The footage was shot from the center-field press box. It showed Dave on the pitcher’s mound, winding up for a fastball. But Elias’s mechanical eye immediately drifted to the background-the busy suburban road running directly behind the low, visibly frayed netting of the baseball diamond’s backstop.
On the screen, Dave released the ball. It slipped from his grip, sailing wild and high over the batter. It easily cleared the inadequate, drooping safety net. In the background, Elias watched as the baseball plummeted toward the street, striking the windshield of a passing silver sedan with devastating force. The safety glass spider-webbed instantly. The driver-the local high school teacher-panicked, violently jerking the wheel. The car caught the concrete curb and violently rolled over into the ditch.
Elias stared at the frozen frame, his pulse hammering in his ears. The faulty steering column was a complete fabrication. The crash was a freak accident.
Dave’s voice cracked in the dim hallway. He told Elias that he had gone straight to Valerie Hayes that morning to confess. Valerie was not just the town’s most prominent, polished safety advocate and local online influencer; she was also the president of the youth sports league. The league’s insurance had lapsed months ago, and the backstop netting hadn’t been updated in a decade. Dave had brought the video to Valerie, hoping to prove the wild pitch was just a tragic accident so she could help him navigate coming forward to the police.
Instead, Valerie realized a catastrophic lawsuit would bankrupt her organization and destroy her pristine, community-savior brand. She buried the tape. To redirect the town’s anger and give them a villain, she had used her massive social media platform to fabricate the devastating rumor about Elias installing faulty steering columns.
Dave violently snapped the laptop shut. Before Elias could stop him, the teenager grabbed the device and sprinted down the hallway toward the main garage bays. He shouted that he was going to end this right now.
Elias dropped the crowbar and chased after him, his heavy boots pounding across the shop floor. Dave reached the master control panel and slammed his fist onto the green button. The massive, corrugated metal bay door rattled upward, flooding the dim, quiet shop with harsh afternoon sunlight.
The mob outside immediately turned, a sea of hostile faces and crossed arms. Standing front and center was Valerie Hayes. She held her smartphone on an expensive gimbal ring-light, perfectly styled and speaking in her signature, faux-empathetic tone as she live-streamed the blockade to her thousands of followers.
Dave marched directly out onto the sunbaked asphalt, holding the laptop high against his chest. Elias stayed glued to the boy’s shoulder, his muscles coiled, ready to drag the kid back inside at the first sign of violence.
Dave brought the full, unedited game tape right up to Valerie’s face. He yelled over the murmuring crowd, begging her to look at the screen. He told her he was broadcasting the original file to the cloud, hoping to prove to everyone watching that his wild pitch was an accident, and that she knew Elias had absolutely nothing to do with the teacher’s crash.
Elias watched Valerie’s face closely. For a fraction of a second, her polished, deeply concerned advocate persona completely dissolved. Her warm, photogenic smile flattened into a tight, bloodless line. Her eyes went flat, venomous, and sharply calculating. She didn’t even glance down at the screen. She already knew exactly what was on it.
Instead of looking, Valerie reached out and viciously slapped the laptop from Dave’s hands. The heavy machine clattered against the pavement, the screen shattering across the asphalt.
“They’re doctoring footage now!” Valerie shrieked. Her voice completely lost its practiced, soothing cadence, turning sharp and maliciously loud. She thrust her live-streaming camera aggressively toward Dave and Elias. “Look at what this criminal is doing! He’s threatening a child to fake evidence and cover up his crimes!”
Elias stepped in front of Dave, shouting for the crowd to just look at the broken laptop, to see the truth for themselves.
But Valerie didn’t give them a chance. She dropped the caring persona completely, pointing a manicured finger directly at Elias’s chest. She screamed at the mob of influencers and enraged vigilantes that Elias was coming for their families next. She commanded them to swarm him.
The mob roared, instantly incited by her malicious direction. The line of men broke forward, swarming across the property line, violently surging toward Elias and Dave as the inescapable truth dissolved in the blinding sunlight.
