Part 4: The Silent Printout
Mara watched the progress bar on the mass spectrometer’s primary display transition from amber to green. The hum of the vacuum pump shifted to a higher, thinner whine as the liquid nitrogen cooling jacket stabilized the ionization chamber.
Dr. Marcus Vance stood beside the console, his hands resting flat against the edge of the desk. His gaze remained fixed on the system status line. Beside him, Leo Vance did not move, his eyes locked on the graphical output area of the screen where the isotope spikes would soon plot.
Claire Kelly sat at her terminal, her hands resting in her lap. She did not look at either man. Her eyes stayed on the numerical telemetry scrolling down the left side of her monitor.
On the main display, the first peak appeared. It was a sharp, narrow vertical line that climbed rapidly past the baseline. A second peak followed, then a third, clustering at an atomic mass unit that had no business appearing in a current standard ink sample.
“The deuterated polymer spike is at mass 178,” Claire said, her voice quiet in the silent basement. “It matches the theoretical signature of the batch scheduled for next Thursday’s run.”
Marcus did not speak. His face remained expressionless, but his right hand slowly slipped off the edge of the desk and rested against his side.
“There is a secondary marker,” Claire continued, pointing a finger at a smaller peak that had just registered on the far right of the graph. “The radioactive decay signature of the synthetic Lutetium-177m carrier. The decay curve matches a manufacturing date exactly thirty years from today. The isotope ratio is stable. The retrocausal loop has locked the data.”
The small thermal printer built into the side of the mass spectrometer clicked, then began to feed out a narrow strip of paper with a soft, mechanical buzz. The paper curled as it emerged, displaying the official verification seal, the biometric authorization code of Dr. Marcus Vance, and the future isotope signature.
Mara watched Marcus look down at the printout. He did not pull the paper from the slot. The machine’s automated validation routine finished, and a high-pitched chime signaled that the scan was complete.
On Claire’s monitor, a red text box appeared: *Verification complete. Retrocausal artifact validated. Patent metadata updated to co-authored status per pre-registered project guidelines.*
Marcus’s fingers twitched, but he did not touch the keyboard. The automated system had already synchronized the verification log with the university’s central patent database. Because the artifact was verified under Marcus’s own biometric authorization, the system had automatically locked the patent file against unilateral modifications to prevent timeline paradoxes. Marcus’s administrative access to the lab’s primary funding account now showed a greyed-out status icon, replaced by a pending administrative review flag.
Leo stepped back from the machine. He did not look at his uncle. He picked up his notebook from the prep table, slipped it into his bag, and walked toward the heavy metal door of the sub-basement. The door clicked shut behind him with a dull, heavy thud.
Mara watched Claire Kelly log out of her terminal. She picked up her coat, turned off the secondary monitors, and walked out of the room, leaving Marcus standing alone under the fluorescent lights beside the silent printer.
