Eli Hart was using polished jargon to shut me down over the sensor bracelet on the bench in Lab 3B, right in the middle of the university lab, while Noah Kim kept the tray line moving and the bracelet’s screen stayed lit between us. He stood at the microstation like the room belonged to him, tapping the glass edge with a capped pen, and when I said the calibration step was off, he cut across me before I could finish the sentence.
“No, Maya, that is not how the entanglement coupling is reading,” he said, loud enough for Dr. Lena Vaughn to look up from the monitor. “You are treating a coherence lattice issue like a timing issue. Those are not the same thing.”
The words came out clean and fast. They always did when he wanted the room to stop asking questions.
I had my gloves on and my notes open, but he kept moving the conversation like a door he knew how to lock. Noah slid a sterile tray closer to the bracelet cradle, and the little metal band gave a thin green blink on the charging pad. The display showed the setup was live. The bracelet was not hypothetical, not in a draft, not in a meeting. It was sitting there with its test leads attached and the readout waiting.
“We need to slow down and check the reference alignment,” I said.
Eli gave a short laugh through his nose and leaned a hand on the bench. “We already did. You keep thinking in old terms. This is a phase-locked entanglement pass. The bracelet is compensating for drift you do not have the background to interpret.”
He did not look at the screen when he said it. He looked at me. That was the point.
Noah’s hands kept sorting cables, but his eyes flicked from the bracelet to Eli and back. Dr. Vaughn set her mug down and stepped closer to the monitor without saying anything yet. Around us, the lab stayed in its ordinary rhythm. A centrifuge hummed in the next bay. Someone at the far counter snapped on a pipette tip. A keyboard clacked once, stopped, then started again.
