Part 4: The Algorithm’s Judgment
The streamer’s face flushed a deep, mottled red under the glare of his own LED ring light. His eyes darted frantically between the damning administrative ledger on Elias’s tablet and the rapidly shifting text on his smartphone screen. The digital mob, his primary weapon and source of power, was fracturing in real-time. Dozens of viewers were turning on him, flooding the chat with demands that he explain the timestamps Elias had just forced into the frame.
“Get that away from my camera!” the kid snapped, his manufactured outrage replaced by a sudden, desperate panic. He lunged forward, thrusting his free hand through the jagged hole in the diner’s front window to shove the delivery tablet out of his broadcast.
Elias hadn’t expected the sudden physical strike. He had braced for an argument, not a blow. The kid’s palm slammed hard into the top edge of the heavy, rubber-encased tablet.
“Hey!” Elias shouted, his grip slipping as the device twisted violently in his hands.
The bottom edge of the tablet caught the jagged teeth of the broken window pane. The impact acted as a lever, ripping the device entirely out of Elias’s thick fingers. It tumbled through the empty space, striking the exterior brick sill with a sickening crunch before plummeting to the concrete sidewalk outside.
“I’m out of here! You’re crazy!” the streamer yelled. He didn’t bother looking down at the ruined hardware. He spun on his muddy sneakers, his puffy jacket swishing loudly as he sprinted away down the shadowy street. The blinding ring light bounced wildly with every step until he disappeared around the corner, leaving only the distant wail of a siren in his wake.
Elias stood perfectly still behind the broken glass. The sudden absence of the bright light plunged the diner back into its dim, amber glow. The frantic energy of the confrontation evaporated instantly, leaving behind a hollow, freezing vacuum.
He stepped carefully through the ruined window frame, his work boots crunching heavily on the pulverized safety glass that dusted the sidewalk. He bent down and picked up the delivery tablet. The thick rubber casing hadn’t saved it from the direct impact with the brick sill. The heavy glass screen was shattered into a complex, radiating spiderweb of deep fissures. Half of the display was completely dead, a void of liquid black. The other half flickered wildly, the red text of the exonerating support logs glitching and tearing into unreadable digital noise.
Elias carried the broken machine back inside. He didn’t walk behind the counter. Instead, he pulled out one of the red vinyl stools near the front window, moving the chunk of concrete out of the way with his heavy boot, and sat down. The cold night air poured steadily through the shattered window, chilling the sweat on the back of his neck.
He set the glitching tablet on the scratched formica counter. He had won the argument. He had forced the truth into the light. He had defended his physical space and cleared his name to the very people who had wanted to destroy him. But as he sat in the quiet ruin of his life’s work, the victory felt entirely empty.
His personal smartphone buzzed in his apron pocket. A single, short vibration.
Elias pulled it out. The endless barrage of hateful text messages, violent threats, and one-star review notifications had actually stopped. The streamer’s retreating audience had apparently moved on to their next fleeting outrage, satisfied or bored. But the new notification waiting on his lock screen didn’t come from a social media platform. It was an urgent push alert from the delivery app’s merchant portal.
He tapped the screen with a heavy, trembling thumb.
*Notice of Account Termination.*
Elias stared at the bold black text. He opened the full message. There was no greeting, no reference to the viral video, no acknowledgment of the fourteen stolen meals, and no mention of the physical damage to his storefront.
*Your merchant account has been permanently deactivated due to a violation of our Terms of Service (Section 4: Threatening Behavior toward Delivery Partners). This decision is final and cannot be appealed. Final payouts will be withheld pending review of outstanding customer refunds.*
Elias felt a coldness settle deep in his chest that had nothing to do with the draft blowing through the broken window. The faceless algorithm hadn’t watched the streamer’s live broadcast. It hadn’t seen the timestamps Elias had forced into the camera lens. The app’s automated system had simply registered a massive spike of negative reports, flagged the initial ten-second viral clip of him grabbing the bag across the internet, and executed a predetermined risk-mitigation protocol.
It had erased him. Twenty years of cooking, thousands of late nights, his entire financial lifeline in a digitally-dependent neighborhood-all wiped out by a line of code executing its parameters with zero human intervention.
He tapped the “Contact Support” button at the bottom of the email. A sterile pop-up appeared instantly: *Error: Account Not Found.*
Elias slowly lowered the phone. He looked at the shattered delivery tablet on the counter, its broken screen finally giving out and fading to completely black. He looked at the chunk of concrete resting on his freshly mopped linoleum. David was gone. His insurance was gone. His merchant account was gone.
The physical threat of the mob had vanished into the night, but they had merely been the symptoms. The machine itself had already passed judgment. Elias sat completely alone in the freezing quiet of his empty diner, gently brushing a few loose pieces of cracked glass off the counter, waiting for a morning that would bring him nothing.
