“The market doesn’t care about your digital museum,” Marcus’s voice echoed smoothly through the phone.

Silas stared at the deletion counter. 912,000. He couldn’t kill the software script. The medical proxy was ironclad at the operating system level.

But the ghost diagnostic port didn’t just monitor network traffic. It was a leftover from the initial hardware installation phase, tied directly into the Intelligent Platform Management Interface. The hardware layer.

Silas dragged the cracked laptop closer, pressing his violently shaking right arm against his ribs to anchor his body. His left hand hovered over the keyboard. If he couldn’t save the archive, he wasn’t going to let Marcus sell a sanitized, state-approved corpse of it.

He opened a new command line.

He hit enter.

On the split-screen video feed, Marcus suddenly lowered his phone. Even through the low-resolution camera, Silas saw the venture capitalist look up toward the ceiling. The deafening, relentless roar of the server room’s cooling fans had abruptly spun down into complete silence.

“Silas,” Marcus said, his voice tightening. “What did you do?”

“The physical drives are running a DOD-level overwrite at maximum voltage,” Silas gasped out, his chest heaving as another severe tremor rocked his spine. “Without cooling, the platters will warp in about three minutes. The CPUs will melt their own solder.”

“You’re bluffing,” Marcus snapped. But on the video feed, the ambient temperature sensors on the server racks were already flashing from green to amber.

“You wanted them permanently eradicated,” Silas said, his breathing ragged. “I’m just making sure.”

A shrill, mechanical klaxon began echoing over the phone. The physical heat alarms. On the video feed, Marcus’s corporate composure shattered. He grabbed his briefcase and sprinted for the glass door, shoving it open and fleeing down the hallway just as the server racks began to emit thick plumes of black smoke.

Silas didn’t look away from the screen as the temperature gauges hit critical. A moment later, the automated fire suppression system engaged. The ceiling vents dumped thousands of pounds of highly corrosive chemical retardant directly onto the sparking, superheated racks.

The primary servers were completely, physically destroyed.

Three months later, Silas sat at a battered particle-board desk in a cramped, first-floor apartment. He couldn’t manage stairs anymore. His right arm rested in a rigid, molded polymer brace, completely immobilized. The violent tremors had finally burned themselves out, leaving behind permanent nerve death. Dr. Aris had been right; the sheer stress of the clinic floor that day had accelerated the basal ganglia deterioration past the point of any medical intervention.

With his left hand, Silas nudged aside a stack of final-notice medical bills. The physical therapy and daily neurological medications were bankrupting him, a reality made exponentially worse by the total collapse of his equity.

The Alexandria Archive IPO had evaporated in a cloud of chemical smoke. Without the proprietary hardware and the curated database, the Texas state contract was immediately pulled. The venture capital board had ousted Marcus in a furious proxy battle, and the company had subsequently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, its remaining assets entirely liquidated to cover the structural damage to the building.

They had sold everything. Including the supposedly worthless, disconnected magnetic backup tapes sitting securely in an off-site cold storage vault.

Silas had bought them at the liquidation auction through a proxy LLC for six hundred dollars.

He looked at the cheap, refurbished monitor humming quietly on his desk. A massive external tape reader sat beside it, whirring as it extracted the final blocks of data. It had taken him weeks of painstaking, one-handed coding to bypass his own encryption, but the backup was finally fully unpacked. Every single controversial text, every banned manifesto, and every fragile historical document was perfectly preserved.

He wasn’t going to build another walled garden. He wasn’t going to host a centralized server for a board of directors to monetize and sanitize.

Silas keyed in the final command sequence. He uploaded the master directory to a decentralized, open-source peer-to-peer network.

He clicked *Seed*.

The terminal window hung for a second. Then, a connection pinged from a university IP in Austin. Then another from a public library in Seattle. Then fifty more from anonymous student nodes across the globe. The banned literature was fracturing into ten thousand encrypted pieces, scattering across the world, multiplying faster than any government or corporation could ever track.

Silas leaned back in his cheap chair. His right arm was dead, his bank account was drained, and his life’s work had cost him everything. But as he watched the download counter spin wildly upward, a quiet, unsteady smile broke across his pale face. The books were out. And no one would ever be able to burn them again.
